HOW TO CLEAN AND MAINTAIN YOUR SEWING TOOLS

Every project is easier and   faster to finish when you know and trust your tools. Whether it’s a hobby or a business your trying to start up with your sewing, you need to take care of your tools because you have invested money in them.

Here is a guide I have written with tips for cleaning your tools and equipment.

SEWING MACHINE

  • Always read your sewing machine manual to learn more about cleaning it and maintaining it. Incase you bought it second hand and it didn’t come with one, you can always find a manual online for your particular machine.
  • When not in use cover your sewing machine with a dust cover to prevent dust build up.
  • Always leave the presser foot down when not in use
  • Use good quality thread
  • Always dust the bobbin area with a brush after a project.
  • Unplug the machine when not in use.

SCISSORS

  • Avoid throwing your Scissors down or hitting them on hard surfaces as this can damage them.
  • Fabric Scissors should be used on fabric only and paper Scissors can be used to cut out your patterns.
  • Avoid using the tip of Scissors to cut your fabric as this can cause misalignment and your cut outs will not be precise.
  • Wipe off Scissors with a soft cloth to remove thread and lint from them.

IRON

  • Clean the bottom of the iron with a clean cloth to remove residual.

NEEDLES AND PINS

  • Always use a sharp needle in your sewing machine and change it at least after every project.
  • Make sure to use the right needle size for the fabric.
  • Store your pins in a pin cushion  or container to avoid injury.
  • Use strong good quality pins so they do not bend or break.

TAPE MEASURE

  • Always keep your tape measure rolled up or some place it will not be folded and wrinkled up, so that your measurements are accurate.

Those are all the tips I have for cleaning and maintaining my sewing tools. In case anyone has some more to add on, please leave them in the comment section below. I would really like to hear from you.
